The Dawson Gold Penny is a replica of a privately minted coin, or trade token. It is fabricated from natural, unrefined, 20K gold mined on the historic Fortymile River by Fortymile Gold Placers. Each solid gold coin weighs approximately 6.5 grams.
Some children playing behind the Dawson City Museum found a penny-like copper coin in 1996. Research, assisted by Parks Canada and the Dawson City Museum, revealed that there were several similar, privately minted coins issued in the early 1900's. Perhaps a die maker came to the Klondike Gold Rush with his tools and created these coins for various local businesses.
The original coin on which the Dawson Gold Penny is modeled, was issued by the proprietors of the M & N Bar and Billiard Hall when it opened in Dawson City in 1901. It was a two part coin similar to the Canadian $2 coin. The outer portion was pot metal with a copper centre the size and weight of a copper penny. The reverse of the coin says "good for 25¢ in trade":
The Dawson Gold Penny is a replica of the insert portion of the coin which the children found. Our solid gold coins are professional minted by Master Engravers of Vancouver, B.C. exclusively for Fortymile Gold Workshop/ Studio.
The Gold Penny is for sale at Fortymile Gold Workshop/ Studio in Dawson City. Bezels, specially made for this coin of 14K gold, are available, allowing it to be worn as a pendant without damaging it.
We called this privately minted coin ''the Dawson Gold Penny'' because the original on which it is modelled was fabricated from a restamped copper penny, (even though the reverse side reads ''good for 25c in trade''). The Dawson Gold Penny is exclusively fabricated for us from 20K placer gold mined on the Fortymile River..
